Level Bombing co-op

Post by Silk » Thu May 12, 2016 1:00 am

As requested/offered, I've put together a pretty basic mission so those that are interested can practice level bombing on Friday ahead of this Sunday's Ops. Due to the rather low spec of my PC, it would likely be better if someone else could host this, so here are the files.

https://app.box.com/s/6imv4ha4h3jjr7apbcaxowjydc4h4oui

PS - if anyone wants this in single-player mission format, give me a shout and I will try and convert it.

PPS - I'm not promising that the AI defensive flights will actually defend as they should. This is my first attempt and they seem not very interested in joining combat. :))

PPPS - Any critique is welcome. Just remember that this is my first attempt please.

Thanks Jacko :thumbup

Was a bit late last night when I posted, so didn't do much of an explanation of the mission.

The mission is basically designed to practice level bombing from an altitude of 4-5000m in either a He-111 or Ju-88. There are two spawn points for the bombers. One is on the runway with engines started and the other is on the ramp for those that like to practice taxi-ing. Air starts at 1000m are also available for those that maybe crash during take off and don't want to hold the mission up when re-joining. There is an optional fighter escort element from a separate airfield consisting of either Bf-109 G2's or FW-190's. Again these are either from the runway or the ramp. No air starts are available for fighters as they can gain altitude much more easily and efficiently than the bombers.

The mission itself is a dawn take-off with an initial climb to altitude at the first waypoint. This will also be the Rendezvous point for any available fighter escort to meet up with the bomber force. After attaining the desired altitude the bombers will set off to fly the mission. I have placed a train at the railway station which is the first target along with a success message if the train is destroyed. This should help determine whether or not the bombers should proceed to the secondary objective.

You can expect only mild air defence interference as the purpose of the mission is ultimately to give folks a chance to practice flying the bombers and to operate the sights in level bombing mode.

The mission is designed to be flown in co-op mode, but it should be easy enough to make a single-player version of it if anyone is interested. Inclusion of the fighter option is mainly there so that those who do not much like the bombers can still join in and have a little practice at flying escort.

Hehe - no, it's not that good. Maybe the concept of the mission is okay, but the implementation of the air defences in particular leaves quite a bit to be desired in terms of providing a challenge for our more experienced pilots. That, though, is fairly intentional as the idea is to try out level bombing and practice using the bomb sight rather than having to wade and weave through layers of air defence to reach the target.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, though. Maybe I'll sign up for the roster once I've had a bit more of a chance to try stuff out.

If anyone is interested in a preview ahead of tomorrow's organized flight, I'll see if I can host the mission this evening when I get in. Be warned that I only have an old PC running on an Intel Core 2 Duo system with 8Gb of RAM, so hosting is not that good. It may just support one or two though.

I flew the mission in a He-111 this evening. I found that it takes around 15 minutes to get to 4000m. I then flew to first target, bombed and headed straight back to base to land. The entire mission lasted around 50 minutes that way.

I've also edited the mission to get rid of the names of the translator icon border markers. New link is in first post of this thread.

Silk, I've downloaded your mission, but I can't seem to find it in the ME. Is it MP (dogfight) or SP? (I'm a bit tired and emotional, having come back from the local, etc...)

OK Silk. I'm a bit pissed off. Why did you not include the .mission file in your zip. file? You must know that without the .mission file it doesn't show up in the "open file" dialogue box. I had to do some voodoo figuring-out just to open your mission? Why? Why not try to help people might want to help you? It's taken me half an hour to figure out how to find and open your mission. Un-sodding-cool.

Rather looking forward to flying it sometime! Book a Friday night! - And bleedin' well encourage people to turn up! (I'm talking mostly to myself!...)

I most humbly apologise - I wasn't aware that I hadn't included it. I just highlighted all the files, right click, send to compressed file. It certainly wasn't my intention to annoy, vex or otherwise inconvenience anyone.

Incidentally, I've tweaked it a little since last upload in that I decided that 4k was a bit of a long old climb so I lowered it to 3k and brought the Soviet CAP above both targets down a little too.

Once again, please accept my apologies

Silk, I was - ahem - tired and emotional. Computer monitor now adorned with post-its to self: Don't post comments when "overwrought". Apologies going in the wrong direction - they should be flowing from me to all and sundry. x_x

... Jacko, you know me too well...

Just putting the finishing touches this morning to tonight's mission (Yikes!). Not much to do, since Prangster's amazing templates do so much of the heavy lifting. :salute Should have the briefing up in a couple of hours.

No problem. Sometimes things just overflow. It's a fact I have to deal with frequently due to my tendency to bottle things up then unload over something that is likely quite minor. I am well known for it amongst my friends.

Anyhow - least said, soonest mended.
